A calm and tranquil adaptation of a typical 1930s Roundhay family home, tailored specifically for Hayden and Jess.
What the client wanted
The challenge was to radically overhaul a tired and outdated post-war, semi-detached house into a contemporary dwelling that provided Jess and Hayden with a tranquil retreat from their day-to-day routines.
From the offset, it was clear that this ambitious couple wanted to create something unique and unexpected. With a keen interest in high-quality materials and simple, well-executed architecture, we were excited to help them deliver their future home.
Our idea
Like many post-war houses, the original property was built with durability in mind. However, as is often the case with these properties, the limited floor space led to poorly designed and ineffective extensions being added to the rear.
To unlock the property's potential, we understood the need for a creative approach. Our goal was to design living spaces that were filled with natural light and seamlessly connected to the garden, while also ensuring that the service areas were highly functional and efficient.
An open-plan kitchen dining area was created at the rear of the property and connected to the garden through the introduction of large, glazed sliding doors and a window seat that was specifically designed to work with both the internal and the external spaces. This move allowed the Utility Room and Prep Kitchen to be located at the centre of the plan, in the areas that are starved of natural light.
The extension was purposefully designed to contrast with the original property's architecture and to align with Jess and Hayden's design aspirations. It consists of a monolithic, single-storey, flat roof structure, built from pale brick and sandstone. The addition wraps around the side and rear of the property, peeking out from behind the original house and revealing a glimpse of its sleek and contemporary design to passers-by. Large rooflights punctuate the flat roof and allow natural light to pour into the interior, creating a bright yet calming living space.
The interior of the property has been thoughtfully designed to complement the architectural style of the extension. A cohesive and paired back material palette is used throughout, extending to the kitchen and various pieces of custom-built furniture. The result is a space that elegantly hides the everyday clutter while maintaining high functionality and celebrating the client’s attention to detail.
