The Hidden House – transforming a dated detached house to create a vibrant, open plan family home with treetop views.
What the client wanted
Ruth and Andy fell in love with this tired detached house because of its wonderful location, hidden away in a large plot surrounded by beautiful mature trees. They wanted to create a place for their young family to thrive with space for everyone to call their own, as well as modern open plan living spaces and great connection to the garden for everyone to enjoy together.
Our idea
We reordered the internal layout arranging the fun family areas to the rear in a large open plan space, which is subdivided by changes in floor and ceiling level to define each zone. The lowered lounge floor was made closer to the garden level for a better connection to the rear terrace. We moved the main entrance to create an exciting dynamic arrival into the property opening up to the main living space with fantastic views of the garden.
Extensions to the front and rear were carefully positioned to create the additional space required while sorting out the existing irregular and disjointed front and rear elevations. We used a palette of zinc, timber and render to create a uniformed modern aesthetic.
