An extension for Krag and Holly - Reimagining a typical Roundhay Semi as a 21st Century Family Home
What the client wanted
The brief was to transform a well-worn, typical Roundhay semi and allow this young family to stamp their identity on the property. Time was tight with a new baby on the way. As young entrepreneurs with a reputation for doing things differently they were happy for their home to echo their adventurous spirit.
Our idea
With space at a premium, we had to think creatively about how we could maximise the existing floor area and keep the size of any extension to a minimum. We wanted to retain us much of the garden as we could.
We deliberately positioned the smaller, service zones such as the utility room, WC and cloakroom in the darkest parts of the house, a move which allowed the open-plan kitchen, dining area and snug to physically connect with the back garden.
Large, glazed sliding doors connect the rear extension to the external terrace and a contemporary oriel window in the kitchen provides a perching space with the added benefit of flooding the kitchen with natural light.
We used the architectural forms of the wraparound side extension to define the internal spaces. The introduction of a modest duo-pitch extension with a vaulted ceiling defined the kitchen area. A flat roofed extension with several large roof lights then outlined the dining area, whilst the snug was set back within the footprint of the existing dwelling, creating a cosy, intimate space for relaxing.
With juxta-positioned architectural forms defining the internal spaces, we decided to emphasise this externally using different cladding materials. Krag and Holly chose a mix of red brick with contemporary brick bond details and a standing seam metal cladding.
Before
After
"We first came across Mesh architects while walking the streets of North Leeds; we noticed one of their ‘for sale sign’ advertising boards and it caught our attention. When it came to pressing go on building our extension, we knew that we needed an architect that understood what we were trying to achieve. It became clear straight away from our first meeting with Ian that we had found that architect in Mesh.
Ian and the whole team at Mesh are super-friendly and approachable and they all did an amazing job in helping to build our dream home. They even recommended the builder that we ended up using, which gave us extra piece of mind. We can’t recommend Mesh Architects enough!"
